Number one again

Academic Analytics has just released its ranking of research doctoral institutions for 2006-07, and SDSU has retained our position as the nation's top small research university (fewer than 15 PhD programs.) This is a notable achievement because these rankings, based on objective measures of publications, citations, funding, and major awards, are much more mercurial than those based on reputations. Depaul, for example, was second to SDSU last year, and fell to 12th in today's ranking.

Following SDSU were (2) Bryn Mawr, (3) Boston College, (4) Georgetown, (5) Missouri-St. Louis, (6) Catholic U., (7) Brandeis, (8) U. MD. Baltimore Co., (9) Tulane, (10) Clark U. and (11) William and Mary, (12) Depaul.

The z-scores associated with these rankings have not yet been released, so we cannot tell where we rank nationally among all institutions (we were #42 last year). We should know that by the end of the month.

It was particularly gratifying that five of our Joint Doctoral Programs (JDP) were ranked in the top 10 nationally in their disciplines:

Language and Communicative Disorders was #1 in the Speech and Hearing Sciences category Clinical Psychology was #2 Math and Science Education was #2 in the Mathematics Education category Geography was #7 Computational Sciences was #9

Among all American universities, Harvard was #1. Among UCs, Berkeley was #9, UCSD #11, and UCLA #12.

This is magnificent testimony to the productivity of SDSU's JDP faculty and that of our partners. It's through such recognition that the public will come to realize what a respected academic institution SDSU has become.
