SDSU Research Foundation Assists with Pre- and Post-Award Grant Administration

SDSU Research Foundation provides comprehensive pre- and post-award grant and contract services, including grant opportunity information; grant-related workshops; proposal preparation and submission; grants and contracts administration; and program development and management. The following descriptions highlight three units within SDSU Research Foundation.

Office of Communications

SDSU Research Foundation's office of communications is the unit responsible for the overall communications of SDSU Research Foundation, including communication with sponsors, SDSU principal investigators, employees, the media, and other internal and external constituents. An important component of this communication is the grant information function.  Office staff are responsible for the identification and dissemination of grant information to the university community. The office receives and distributes information about federal, state, and private funding sources. Our database of faculty interests allows us to match up grant opportunities with appropriate faculty. We provide program guidelines and application materials, information about agencies, the federal budget, and maintain a file of sample funded proposals. We also provide access to SPIN, a web-based searchable database of federal and non-federal funding opportunities. A series of grant-related workshops is offered each year.

Our goal is to provide as much timely and relevant information as possible, and to encourage and facilitate the submission of grant proposals. For further information about grant opportunities or the office of communications, please contact Deborah Brighton or Jenna McCart at 594-2458 or dbrighton@foundation.sdsu.edu; jmccart@foundation.sdsu.edu .

Sponsored Research Development

The function of this office is to assist faculty and staff in the development of sponsored research and educational projects. Sponsored Research Development is the "pre-award" unit of the foundation and the office faculty should contact once a sponsor has been identified and a proposal is being developed.

Sponsored research development staff can assist faculty with interpreting guidelines, preparing proposal budgets,  completing application forms, contacting potential sponsors, obtaining university approvals, providing information about compliance areas such as human and animal subjects, and submitting proposals . Additional services are also available; faculty members are encouraged to contact director Jennie Amison at 594-5731 with requests for special assistance. In fiscal year 2011, the office helped faculty submit 1,044 proposals to federal, state, local, corporate, and foundation sponsors. The 799 awards received amounted to over $145 million.

If you are preparing to submit a proposal, please contact sponsored research development at 594-5731. One of these staff members will be available to assist you: Jennie Amison, Joanne Cobble, Linda Torgersen, Jennifer Renzi, Andrew Nunn-Miller, Jeannine Zuber, Steve Torok,  Karmin Real, or Joey Principiato.

Sponsored Research Administration

The function of SDSU Research Foundation's sponsored research administration department is to administer externally funded research and educational awards received by the foundation on behalf of the university. SR  Administration also manages all self-support programs (KPBS, College of Extended Studies) and serves as fiscal administrator of The Campanile Foundation funds. This unit of the foundation is currently responsible for the post-award administration of approximately 1,000 active grant funds.

The staff of the SRA department assist principal investigators and other project personnel by facilitating administrative and financial management activities, including cost projections, budget adjustments, review and approval of expenditure documents and payroll/personnel actions, interpreting and implementing sponsor policies; interfacing with sponsoring agencies; and training project staff members on SDSU Research Foundation procedures. Departmental personnel strive to help faculty and staff efficiently and cooperatively manage their projects. Faculty are urged to contact the administrator assigned to handle their projects. If you need assistance in determining who to contact, please call the front desk at 594-5785.
