If you hold an Hourly position that is being changed to a position that is considered "Regular-Salaried," a competitive recruitment process is normally conducted. If you have applied for the position and are the final candidate selected, you will be notified by SDSU Research Foundation's Human Resources Department of your confirmed appointment. You can expect to receive an offer letter, employment agreement, benefit enrollment forms, and an invitation to attend an orientation that will more fully describe your new employee benefits.
In most cases, if you are a Regular-Salaried employee and your appointment drops below 20 hours per week, your employment status will change to an hourly position. Most hourly employees are not eligible for many programs that are available to Regular-Salaried employees. Some include employee benefits which may be important to you. Those benefits may include, but are not limited to:
Prior to your last day of Regular-Salaried employment, you should receive an information packet detailing the changes that apply to your circumstance. However, if you have not received an information packet, please contact SDSU Research Foundation's Human Resources Department to determine the effect your change in status has on your employee benefits.
If the funding for your position is changing from the University to SDSU Research Foundation, or from SDSU Research Foundation to the University, there are many important issues for you to consider. As soon as you are aware of this change, plan to talk with Human Resources Representatives from both the University and SDSU Research Foundation about what this change will mean to you. Most importantly, you will want to discuss the differences in benefits and plan options that will be available to you.
If your employment ends because you are resigning from your position, please fax the resignation letter you have already given to your supervisor to SDSU Research Foundation's Human Resources Department at 619-594-3763. Your resignation letter should indicate the reason for your resignation, and your expected last day of employment. If your last day changes for any reason, please notify the Human Resources Department immediately of the new date. Prior to your last day, you will receive an information packet which details things to consider when leaving SDSU Research Foundation.
One important aspect to consider is when your employee benefits end. Most of your insurance plans will end the last day of the month of your employment. For example, if your last day of employment with SDSU Research Foundation is October 9, your health and dental benefits will continue through October 31. The information packet you receive will also include information about how you can continue certain employee benefits through COBRA or conversion.
Another important aspect to consider prior to your last day is the sign-out process. Each employee who has an SDSU Research Foundation identification card will be asked to go through a clearance process. This process includes different departments around campus. You will be provided with a clearance card to obtain the necessary clearance authorizations. The departments you will be required to visit include:

If your employment ends because your contract ends, or this is a layoff, you may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. Although the Employment Development Department (EDD) is the authority for approving benefits, usually unemployment benefits are approved when an employee is laid off. To apply for possible benefits, visit the Employment Development Department's (EDD) website. On the EDD claim form you complete, please list SDSU Research Foundation Human Resources as your employer. The mailing address is 5250 Campanile Drive, 4th Floor, San Diego CA 92182-1945.
If you are enrolled in SDSU Research Foundation's Retirement Plan or the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), you will receive additional information in the mail. If you want more immediate information about what options are available to you under the retirement plan, you may contact TIAA-CREF directly at 1-800-842-2776. If you are interested in continued employment with SDSU Research Foundation, please visit our Job Opportunites web page.
Employees leaving SDSU Research Foundation often have valuable insights to share about SDSU Research Foundation and its operations. The information collected from the Exit Surveys is consolidated with the responses from other Exit Survey participants, analyzed for trends and translated into program developmental priorities for SDSU Research Foundation planning purposes. Exit surveys are confidential and will not become a part of the personnel file. All employees will receive an Exit survey along with a postage paid return envelope in their separation packet when their employment ends. The completed survey should be mailed in the envelope that's been provided in the separation packet.
If your employment ends and you prefer to speak confidentially about your SDSU Research Foundation experience, please contact Human Resources at hr@foundation.sdsu.edu or call (619) 594-4139 to arrange an appointment.
