Sick Leave

  • For full-time employees who are eligible to accrue sick leave, sick leave is credited at the rate of four hours each pay period. If a regular Salaried employee is employed on less than a full-time (100%) basis, the accrual rate will be based on the actual percent of effort.
  • Sick leave can be used for your illness, certain family member's illness (including domestic partners), doctor and dental appointments.
  • Unused sick leave benefits may accumulate from year to year, however unused sick leave accruals are lost upon end of employment.

A notification from a doctor that an employee is able to return to work may be required for any absences of longer than three (3) days. Additionally, a supervisor or SDSU Research Foundation's Director of Human Resources may request a doctor's substantiation at any time regardless of length of absence. For illnesses that exceed 5 working days, employees should contact SDSU Research Foundation's Human Resources Benefits Team for information on family leave and short term disability benefits which may be available through the State's Disability Insurance program and the State's Paid Family Leave program.

Employees may not use sick leave in excess of what is accumulated. Further, employees may not transfer sick leave credits to other employees. Unused sick time may accumulate from year to year. In most instances, SDSU Research Foundation will not authorize sick leave pay for the final two weeks of an employee's appointment without a doctor's substantiation. For certain employees, a portion of accumulated sick leave is paid upon retirement.

Misuse of sick leave or falsification of sick leave documents may result in suspension, termination of employment, or other appropriate action. Employees who use excessive sick leave or who use sick leave as it is accumulated are subject to disciplinary action.
