SDSU Campus Privileges

Upon employment with SDSU Research Foundation, Regular–Salaried employees attend a new hire orientation, which includes an in–depth review of the employee benefits program. The benefits program, when considered as part of the total compensation package, may represent up to 40% or more of compensation. Most benefits are effective the first of the month following the regular–salaried appointment date.

Health Insurance

Health Insurance, available through an HMO with Kaiser (Kaiser Benefits Summary for Southern California Employees) (PDF Format, 18 KB)*, (Kaiser Benefits Summary for Northern California Employees) (PDF Format, 55 KB)*, or Health Net (Health Net HMO Benefits Summary) (PDF Format, 30 KB)*, or a PPO with Health Net (Health Net PPO Summary) (PDF Format, 45KB)*, is effective the first of the month following the regular salaried appointment date. Health insurance includes vision and chiropractic coverage and both HMOs are available to employees at no cost. If employees wish to enroll in the PPO or to enroll dependents, including domestic partners, there is a monthly premium through payroll deduction.

Dental Insurance

Dental Insurance, available through United Concordia DHMO Summary  (PDF Format, 189 KB)* or United Concordia PPO Summary  (Word Format, 231 KB)* is effective the first of the month following the regular–salaried appointment date. Dental insurance is available to employees at no cost. If employees wish to enroll dependents, including domestic partners, there is a small monthly premium through payroll deduction.

Retirement Plan

A retirement plan is available through a Defined Contribution Retirement Plan with TIAA–CREF. Generally, upon completion of 1,000 hours of service (usually six months of full–time work), SDSU Research Foundation will contribute an amount equivalent to 10% of an eligible employee's gross pay to the plan. Contributions are immediately vested.

Life Insurance

Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) is paid for by SDSU Research Foundation for regular–salaried employees and is each equal to one times the annual salary rounded up to the nearest thousand. The benefits policy is for term life insurance through The Hartford. Supplemental voluntary life insurance and voluntary AD&D are also available, paid for by employees.

Disability Insurance

Disability Insurance provides income to eligible employees who are prevented from working by an illness or injury. Short–term disability coverage is provided through State Disability Insurance and is paid for through employee payroll taxes. Long–term disability insurance is paid for by SDSU Research Foundation, is effective upon the first of the month following the regular–salaried appointment date, and may provide coverage (income and retirement contributions) after three months of continuous disability.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

EAP is an employer paid benefit through Horizon Health which provides evaluation and crisis intervention for eligible employees, their eligible dependents, and for anyone who resides in the employee's household. It also provides personal, financial, and legal counseling.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

For new hires who enroll in the program, FSAs for healthcare and dependent care are effective the first of the month following the regular salaried appointment date. FSA contributions are made via pre–tax payroll deductions throughout the year and can be used for eligible out–of–pocket health care and dependent care costs for employees and eligible dependents. The FSA program is administered through Discovery Benefits.

Tax Deferred Annuities

Tax Deferred Annuities are offered on a voluntary basis to all employees of SDSU Research Foundation. Employees may choose among specific SDSU Research Foundation–approved companies to contribute toward their own retirement. All employee contributions are on a salary reduction basis (pre-tax).

Vacation

Vacation days for most regular-salaried employees accrue throughout the year and may be used as accrued, with supervisory approval. Vacation benefits for most full–time employees are awarded at the rate of ten days per year. Eligible part–time employees working at least 20 hours per week are awarded vacation appropriate to their percentage of work time. The number of vacation hours earned each pay period increase at various intervals throughout SDSURF employment.

Paid Holidays

Paid holidays include 14.5 days (13.5 paid holidays, one personal holiday each year). Some of the paid holidays (4.5 days) are scheduled for consecutive days off during the winter break in December.

Sick Days

Sick days are accrued each pay period, equating to one day per month, and may be carried over from year to year. Up to six consecutive sick days a year (if accruals are available) may be used for illness or bereavement in the immediate family.

Parking

Parking for employees who work on campus is paid by employees with pre–tax dollars through payroll deduction and is currently $30 per month.
