About InfoEd

InfoEd is an application designed to manage the multiple components of sponsored research in a consolidated, web–based portal. The application is comprised of various modules designed to support the full life cycle of grant activity. Each module has distinctive functionalities that support different aspects of sponsored research. The details of the individual modules are listed below.

SPIN (Sponsored Programs Information Network) is a searchable database containing detailed information about grant programs from more than 1,200 different federal and non–federal sponsoring agencies.

SMARTS (The SPIN Matching And Research Transmittal Service) is an automated daily alerts system that notifies investigators of relevant new programs that match their keyword profiles.

All faculty and staff at San Diego State University who are interested in finding and applying for grants are encouraged to use this system.

GENIUS (Global Expertise Network for Industry, Universities and Scholars) is a database which houses global researchers' academic profiles, bio–sketch templates and CV's. This tool can be used by investigators to find external collaborators for their research opportunities. GENIUS also interfaces with the Proposal Development module by providing bio–sketch information for Principal Investigators and key personnel, further automating the development of applications (see next paragraph).

Proposal Development & Proposal Tracking: Proposal applications can be developed, reviewed and submitted through the Proposal Development module. Some features of Proposal Development include: uploading of proposal application documents, preparing budgets, and the ability to allow project and SDSU Research Foundation staff access to their proposal applications. Once a proposal has been submitted, it goes through an electronic approval process that is customized for each individual proposal based on the information provided.

The Proposal Tracking module is used as a proposal management function that allows for pre–award component tracking. The module allows users to view the status of their submissions, view proposal approvals, monitor and set alerts for deliverable deadlines, attach terms & conditions to proposals or track details of the proposal such as budgets, protocols, reports, etc.

Initially, only Federal NIH proposals will be submitted directly to Grants.gov through the InfoEd interface once the proposal has been completed and the appropriate approvals have been obtained. NSF is actively working with Grants.gov and InfoEd to facilitate system–to–system transmissions in the near future. Other agencies have recently received a deadline extension to comply with system–to–system submissions by the end of 2008.
